prompt two | L O V E

And what you can never know from the beginning is how hard or how long you'll love something; how even when it is gone the love will chase you down, loping like dark flame through your blood.

Some lies are love.

Love blurs your vision; but after it recedes, you can see more clearly than ever. It's like the tide going out, revealing whatever's been thrown away and sunk: broken bottles, old gloves, rusting pop cans, nibbled fishbodies, bones. This is the kind of thing you see if you sit in the darkness with open eyes, not knowing the future. The ruin you've made.

[Mary saves the message. It's only four words, but it's Gareth's voice, it gives her the option to hear it whenever she likes. Little slices of power to take away from him, to give her back control, she should take it all, and yet whenever that moment comes, all she can do is love him.

Men were monsters. Maria Marion had given her heart to one, her life, and had it all trampled into the dirt. She was meant to be more than that, now, strength and fury grown out of those muddy beginnings. And yet there was this man, this man who knew how monstrous he was, and she couldn't cut him down.

She sets her phone down on the counter, looks up into the hotel bathroom's mirror. There's a little blood in her hair, and her makeup needs retouching. She hasn't killed this one, just made him want it, left him with that need, crawling around in his chest and his gut like an insect, a parasite. Destroying his life slowly and more completely. Gordon found the trail of bodies amusing, but it was messy, and Asmodeus wasn't Amon, Mary was meant to be more subtle. She was learning.

Ten minutes to clean herself up and get over to Asmodeus' office. Or maybe Gareth would prefer to see her bloody. Maybe Mary would prefer for him to see her bloody.

It takes her five minutes to get out of the hotel unnoticed, another seven to get across town. Mary wonders if he will have left already, if he'll still be there. The need is there now, to see him, but she can't decide yet if she would hunt him down or let him be.]
