[ He does his best not to get hinky (his mom would chastise him about it later, but that wouldn't care to the whipping he'd give himself after). But boys will be boys and boys are never very subtle, though to Karl's credit he is very much his mother's son so at least he's not being obvious about it.

[ Where Karl's parentage is concerned, Hollis has his suspicions. Suspicions he's never acted upon or had confirmed, but he isn't dumb. As he looks at the boy, his expression hardly changes, although, for an instant, he glances away. ]

[ For all that Betina has taught her son to look at a person and see inside them, Karl doesn't get half as much practice with other people as he does with his supposed father. It's kind of pathetic (he'll admit it), they way he's so desperate to read in between the lines in the hope of finding something profound and meaningful and acknowledging (that's what dads are meant to be, aren't they?). Whatever it is that he's looking for, though, Karl hasn't found it yet.
