[ Moving on — that'd be a novel idea, wouldn't it? Kathleen had tried to move on and, in the end, quite literally did. But perhaps she's still stuck in the most important way of all: living with a familiar whose face reminds her of Phoenix, randomly sending him text messages when she knows she should cut the cord clean and not linger.

His phone buzzes in his pocket. He's just received a picture. Mostly desert, flat and uninteresting with shrubbery and the occasional cactus in the background. In the foreground is a row of broken bear and wine bottles, all of them but one splintered and shattered. Her aim's not bad.

[Mother dearest definitely would not approve of her son staying in touch with the woman who brought shame to his name (or so she says). Maybe she would have adopted more drastic measures to make sure he wouldn't go back to this if she didn't want to spoil him rotten from the start. It wasn't his fault, he doesn't know what he wants, he never had a choice. Even if that was true back then, the young man makes a choice every time Kathleen reaches out to him and he responds.

It wouldn't be so hard to find out if he hadn't earned her trust back, if she wasn't so sure that Phoenix knew better would never commit the same mistake. Which he isn't, in a way, but the exchanges are still a sign of something hanging on a fine line, distance being the biggest factor keeping it untouched and therefore acceptable.]

youre getting better!

[ Sometimes, when Phoenix answers, she doesn't write back and Kathleen doesn't know if that's better or that's worse for the both of them in the long run. One day, she's certain he won't reply back and it will be precisely what she deserves; it's all a matter of time, really, and just as theirs had run out in New England, she knows that time in this will eventually run out as well. He wasn't a boy anymore, he was a young man, and she was no longer there directly in front of him to hold his attention. ]

keep running out of bottles. can't drink the stuff fast enough.

[ She keeps her correspondence light even though the truth is she's miserable and lonely. But Kathleen wants Phoenix to associate only good things with her, even though that's almost a lie. ]
