The sisters say that, when he was born, Isaac hadn't so much as cried — not even when the midwife had slapped his bottom to make sure he breathed right. As little as he talks in general, Isaac speaks even less to Ethan. Which is odd, given that Ethan is the one person he has the most to say to. But, given their age and their time together, in this place that has little to offer as distraction from one another and the sisters, Isaac's silences are profound and his brother knows just how to read them.
