[ Patrick smiles as well, and the only difference, really, is that he doesn't have to will himself into it (not that he knows this is a difference, not yet.) Long practice and an arguably warped sense of humour take care of it all on their own. ]

It depends on what you mean by "supposed to," doesn't it? There are many things that are "supposed to" happen that don't. And vice versa.

[ Things that are 'supposed to' happen that don't. Cassel knows that particular story well-enough to map it on the back of his hand. That particular addage about best laid plans — he knows that one too, knows what happens when they work and when they don't. Memory working makes the whole concept pretty fucked up, anyway. ]

I mean that things aren't always as clearcut like that, [ Cassel says, his brows knitting together into a small frown. ] History's hard to outrun.

[ Patrick tips his head to one side at the frown. It's instinctive to try to pull it apart and decide what it's supposed to mean but sometimes, Patrick thinks, the trick is not doing it so fast that it becomes obvious that you know what it means. ]

Impossible, actually. Given that history doesn't move and never actually gets any farther away, even if you run fast.
