( if strength is mistrust, then that is what sansa has learned with the lannisters. there are no true knights. power is what is gained when the strong take advantage of the weak, and none of the stories were right. it has aged her, but sansa is not so old to refuse the comfort of her mother's arms, because that feels very much like home. even though arya is not with them, nor bran or rickon or robb ( and jon, but sansa knows better than to mention jon ).

she is quiet for a moment, face pressed against the curve of catelyn's shoulder, but she doesn't cry when she once might have. if only I had kept my mouth shut, sansa thought. if only I hadn't wanted to please them so. )

I begged for mercy, but he didn't...and now Arya's gone, and Robb's fighting a war, and everything's wrong. It isn't supposed to be this way.

[ mistrust in those you know aren't family is the strength. other families are meant to be treated with respect but unless there's a tie between the families do not trust them. (even catelyn had made a fatal mistake trusting petyr.) there are (were) knights. starks are a noble house, if anything they may be the only true knights of lore still left. sansa is older but most women would be willing to burrow into the comfort of their mother's arms. (in private, at least.) rickon, bran, arya, and robb are not with them, but catelyn is determined to be home regardless of anything. it's what will keep them alive.

her hand moves up to stroke sansa's hair in a comforting gesture. it's worrisome that sansa is not crying but perhaps she had already allowed herself to cry enough. catelyn knows she has. if only she had fought harder to keep ned in winterfell is one of the only thoughts that circulates deep in catelyn's brain. ]

You couldn't have known. You believed what anyone would have believed. Joffrey is a cruel boy with an even crueler mother. [ she takes a moment to collect herself. ] You couldn't have known this would happen. You couldn't have known that he would not grant your father mercy.

We'll find Arya, all of us and we'll avenge your father and we'll go home to Winterfell where Bran and Rickon are waiting. I promise you.

[ it's a promise catelyn would die trying to keep. (she knows she might have to.) ]
