[ Most people are not Gabriel, who seems to run on smoke rather than oxygen and has set off the sprinkler system on the boys for the last time. He's standing beneath the double-doored entrance to a nightclub, barely sheltered by the overhang and the one lamp arching over the place. Even the bouncer's had better sense to censor the incoming patrons inside.

Gabe watches William swagger along. He exhales a slow stream of smoke and joins the whistled tune. ]

[ william pauses mid-step, head whipping around to see who was harmonizing so nicely. his eyes settle on gabriel, and he whistles the next bar, waiting for the reaction.

a test, something william does often and without warning, to most of the people he meets. a way of deciding whether or not gabriel was worth his time without bothering to strike up conversation. ]

[ Gabe whistles in turn, trilling a few of the notes with a flourish, though his easy stance, leaned back against the door, does not change. Show off. He can't seem to care whether the stranger stays or goes. He lifts his cigarette and takes another drag, almost expectant. ]

[ interesting development. william whistles the final bar, bright and chipper, before deciding to push further. he sticks a hand out, and perhaps his smile would have seemed welcoming, if it weren't sharp as a razor blade. ]
