(Once upon a time they were two peas in a pod and in some ways they still are, but in some ways it's an impossibility, now, too. He doesn't resent it, but it's not an easy sell, losing one's better half.) ]

[ She's watching him; she almost always does. And though it manages to take some of the edge off the bitter pill they've both been forced to swallow, it's never really enough, having to observe at a long distance. There are times, when she's being completely fatalistic, that Catherine thinks it's much much worse, but that's a lie and she knows it. ]

I'd ask about work but I know how all that doom and gloom goes. Besides. I'ce rung to cheer you up, not make that long face of yours longer. Let's have a smile, then. Go on.

[coaxed]

[ At long length, Carl seems to give up, shaking his head before he looks upward, a half-smile upon his features. ]

Don't you have more important things to be doing, darling?

[ From the shadow of her high-up window, looking down onto the street below and her brother upon it, Catherine smiles as well, though her is much brighter than his. (She's always been the cheerful one, as well.) ]

I always have time for victories, Carl. Even little ones.
