( a romantic idea for a girl who used to believe in romance; in beautiful knights that loved you true, and happy endings where the good-hearted always won. there were stories about lovers who would die rather than be parted, swooning gracefully from a poisoned kiss in a song told by bards. sansa used to like those stories: the old sansa. the fool, sansa. before she had watched her father die, killed by the boy she had once believed she loved; and now she knows that there is nothing even the least bit romantic about death, and hardly anything romantic about romance, either.

she has been a pawn far too long. )

I miss him.

[ A romantic idea for a girl who shouldn't have had to deal with such notions ripped from her so soon. It's one thing to be older and married before such notions are ripped away but to have the one you thought would be your prince rip those notions away and kill your father in the process is distressing. Catelyn does not like and will never forgive him (them) for what they've done to her family. But perhaps the silver lining lies with knowing her daughter will be strong after this. To have her fall flat and never get up is a fate that Catelyn doesn't dare to contemplate. Her arms just hold Sansa close hugging her as tightly as she can (almost as if she's worried that Sansa isn't real).

She has been a pawn, but perhaps she can be a pawn that is changed into a queen. ]

We all do. There's not a day that goes by that I, nor any of your siblings do not miss him. [ It has to be worse for Sansa and Arya, they were there. ] No matter what, Sansa, believe me when I say you are not alone in that regard.

( if strength is mistrust, then that is what sansa has learned with the lannisters. there are no true knights. power is what is gained when the strong take advantage of the weak, and none of the stories were right. it has aged her, but sansa is not so old to refuse the comfort of her mother's arms, because that feels very much like home. even though arya is not with them, nor bran or rickon or robb ( and jon, but sansa knows better than to mention jon ).

she is quiet for a moment, face pressed against the curve of catelyn's shoulder, but she doesn't cry when she once might have. if only I had kept my mouth shut, sansa thought. if only I hadn't wanted to please them so. )

I begged for mercy, but he didn't...and now Arya's gone, and Robb's fighting a war, and everything's wrong. It isn't supposed to be this way.

[ mistrust in those you know aren't family is the strength. other families are meant to be treated with respect but unless there's a tie between the families do not trust them. (even catelyn had made a fatal mistake trusting petyr.) there are (were) knights. starks are a noble house, if anything they may be the only true knights of lore still left. sansa is older but most women would be willing to burrow into the comfort of their mother's arms. (in private, at least.) rickon, bran, arya, and robb are not with them, but catelyn is determined to be home regardless of anything. it's what will keep them alive.

her hand moves up to stroke sansa's hair in a comforting gesture. it's worrisome that sansa is not crying but perhaps she had already allowed herself to cry enough. catelyn knows she has. if only she had fought harder to keep ned in winterfell is one of the only thoughts that circulates deep in catelyn's brain. ]

You couldn't have known. You believed what anyone would have believed. Joffrey is a cruel boy with an even crueler mother. [ she takes a moment to collect herself. ] You couldn't have known this would happen. You couldn't have known that he would not grant your father mercy.

We'll find Arya, all of us and we'll avenge your father and we'll go home to Winterfell where Bran and Rickon are waiting. I promise you.

[ it's a promise catelyn would die trying to keep. (she knows she might have to.) ]
